DanceWorks presents Tedd Robinson’s
RIGMAROLE
continuing its Fall 2002 Mainstage Season exclusively at the du Maurier Theatre Centre – dancing out of the box!

DanceWorks is pleased to present acclaimed international dance artist Tedd Robinson performing his whimsical solo Rigmarole and the highly accessible duet, Recruiting Recalcitrance with Ottawa-based B-boy (break-dancer) Ru Padolsky, for two nights only, November 22-23, 8 pm nightly at Harbourfront Centre’s du Maurier Theatre Centre, 231 Queens Quay West. Box Office: 416-973-4000.

An award-winning Ottawa-based choreographer, Tedd Robinson's work has captivated audiences across North America and abroad with its quirky originality, humour and pathos, nuance and camp, all generously infused with wit and beauty. Influences ranging from silent movies, the music of Hanns Eisler et al, and Eastern/Western cultural obsessions blend in Robinson’s creations, leading him to bizarre and wonderful scenarios. He has been commissioned by dance companies and independent artists from coast to coast and beyond. Former Artistic Director of Winnipeg's Contemporary Dancers, he frequently serves as a choreographic monitor at Le Groupe Dance Lab, Ottawa, and is Artistic Director for 10 Gates Dancing Inc. Robinson's critically acclaimed Rokudo: six destinies in three steps received the 1998 Chalmers National Dance Award and was followed by a national tour and performances abroad. Red Line, created as a complementary solo to Rokudo, was nominated for a Dora Mavor Moore Award following its premiere at DanceWorks 100.

Rigamarole premiered in June 2000 at Ottawa’s Canada Dance Festival and toured Canada including the FIND Festival in the fall of 2001. It was recently presented in Dusselfdorf (Germany), and Prague (Czech Republic) in the month prior to the Toronto engagement. Choreography, performance and costume design is by Tedd Robinson, music by Edmund Eagan, lighting by Jean Philippe Trépanier, and set design by Norman Vandal.

“A bittersweet comedy of the soul” --International Dance, Heather Tod Mitchell

“A total original is how to describe Robinson in Rigamarole – a performer with the guise of a German Expressionist film phantom, a Buddhist monk and more than a passing resemblance to the Addam’s Family favouite Uncle Fester. Robinson’s onstage physicality and quicksilver presence is absurd, hilarious and, all the while, supremely subtle....talents like Robinson are to savour ...” – hour, Philip Szporer

In June 2001, 10 Gates Dancing, in co-production with the Canada Dance Festival and in association with Le Groupe Dance Lab and NDH Intempco (Regina), presented 100 Minutes of Dancing in the Studio of the National Arts Centre, an evening of Robinson's short works which included Recruiting Recalcitrance. Concept is by Tedd Robinson, choreography and performance by Tedd Robinson and Ru Padolsky, and lighting by Jean Philippe Trépanier.

“100 Minutes of Dancing was a representative display of why (Robinson is) the most sought-after choreographer of the moment." – Susan Walker, Toronto Star
