THEATRE BY THE BAY Announces its Cast for William Shakespeare’s As You Like It Under the Big Top Tent at beautiful Kempenfelt Bay in Barrie, opening in August All the world's a stage, / And all the men and women merely players — Act ii. Sc. 7 Theatre By the Bay’s Artistic Director Larissa Mair and General Manager Nick Baillie have announced the cast for the company’s production of William Shakespeare’s As You Like It, directed by the award-winning Daryl Cloran. This delicious comedy classic previews from August 12, opens August 14 and runs until September 4 in a Big Top Tent at Heritage Park on Kempenfelt Bay in Barrie. TD Canada Trust is the title sponsor of As You Like It. The cast of this beloved romantic comedy represents a splendid mix of Theatre by the Bay veteran performers and newcomers, including Brett Christopher in the role of Orlando and Jacklyn Francis as the famous Shakespearean heroine Rosalind, both of whom were members of the original Theatre by the Bay ensemble for A Midsummer Night’s Dream three years ago. Also returning from the original ensemble are Benjamin Clost as the magician Touchstone, Alastair Forbes as Silvius and Brian Marler as the melancholy Jaques. Also featured in the cast: Alex Dault (Dennis/2nd Lord/William), Matt Deslippe (Oliver), Christopher Kelk (Corin/Adam), Tyler Murree (Aimiens/Martext/LeBeau/2nd Brother), Brian Paul (Duke Frederick), Andre Sills (Charles/1st Lord/Hymen), Tova Smith (Celia), Jane Spence (Phoebe) and Taylor Trowbridge (Audrey). One of Shakespeare’s early plays, As You Like It is a comedic carnival of disguises, betrayals and love at first sight. Young lovers and despotic rulers chase one another from the palace of Duke Frederick to the Forest of Arden. Shakespeare weaves together greedy inheritors, despotic rulers, a cross-dressing princess and some wonderful magic leading to marriage for several couples, most notably Rosalind and Orlando. Director Daryl Cloran will uniquely set his production at the turn of the nineteenth century (1900's). It is the time of Houdini and Ragtime and Henry Ford and the production will reflect that era with magic, swinging Ragtime music and exciting spectacle. Cloran is the founder of Theatrefront and recipient of the 2002 John Hirsch Award for Directing and the inaugural Toronto Theatre Emerging Theatre Artist Award. His recent theatre credits include the critically acclaimed The Last Five Years for Canadian Stage, The Underpants (Theatrefront) and The Sarajevo Project (Theatrefront). Brett Christopher (Orlando) returns for a third season at Theatre by the Bay after playing Tom “The Wall” Snout in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Mercutio in Romeo & Juliet. Selected theatre credits include Henry & Pierre (Buddies in Bad Times Theatre), The Sea (Actors Repertory Company) and Wit (Magnus Theatre). Jacklyn Francis (Rosalind) played Titania and Hippolyta in Theatre by the Bay’s inaugural production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Other theatre credits include four seasons at the Stratford Festival, Proof (Globe Theatre), Wit (Manitoba Theatre Centre) and The Tomorrow Box (Blyth). Notable television credits include Train 48, The City and FX The Series. Theatre by the Bay, Barrie’s first Shakespeare Company, was founded in 2002 by Baillie and Mair. In three short seasons they have grown to number Gordon Pinsent, David Mirvish and Sir John Neville among their honourary patrons. |
